Great Housewarming Gifts

gift box of green cleaning supplies

A round of applause for the readers of Apartment Therapy: Chicago!

When asked about suggestions for great housewarming gifts, they suggested:

- Food and beverage options (fresh bread, fleur de sel, fancy chocolates, a great bottle of sherry, etc.)

- A basket of green cleaning supplies

- Gift certificates for various businesses in the new neighborhood

- Items that the giver specifically knows the recipient wants

What a nice collection of ideas - all gifts that won't become clutter.

Love the housewarming gifts and I don't thing you can ever go wrong with chocolate!

Karli, lots of people would adore some high-quality chocolate, but I believe you can go wrong with chocolate if the person is diabetic or trying to lose weight. If someone gave me chocolate as a gift, I'd give it away to someone else; I'm sure I'd have no problem finding someone who would like it!

I love this! Not only is it so practical but it's earth friendly. Sometimes I have to laugh at how my opinion has changed... I think Oregon agrees with me! Great post Jeri!

Thanks, Megan! I'm glad Oregon agrees with you. I have both a friend and a cousin in Portland, and they want me to come visit - I'm looking forward to doing that, since I hear nothing but good things about Portland.

Jay, there are wonderful florists all over the world if you want to give flowers.

However, while flowers are great for many people, they are not a universally good gift. Some people are allergic to many flowers, and some (like me) have cats that would jump up and eat them (which could cause problems with some flowers which are poisonous to animals) or drag them all over the house.
