One Person's Organized Space: CDs and Labels

Sometimes I see someone else's space and just gawk at the lovely way it's been organized — and today was one of those days. I was attending an open studio event when I saw Barbara L's CD collection — and got permission to take a photo and share it with you. (Actually, the whole studio was amazing, filled with lovely things, nicely displayed.)

There's so much to like here, starting with the labeling — including the idiosyncratic "auditory pablum." But I also love how the carefully curated collection of shells and artwork shares the space with the CDs, and how these pieces serve as bookends. And I can see that the shelves are adjustable, so this piece of shelving can readily be used for something other than CDs if Barbara so desires in the future.

I find images like this to be much more inspiring than those you see, in magazines and on TV, of perfectly organized spaces —because it's real and has tons of personality.

  1. I love this! I'm always revising my categories for things - music, files, photos. They never seem "just right". Maybe the point is to keep mixing it up, reshaping the divisions to keep them fresh and compelling. Auditory pablum - I believe I will borrow that for my next round. I wish I could enlarge the picture enough to see what CDs she had filed under that section..

  2. Tracy, the "auditory pablum" included some Windham Hill recordings, and I think I remember seeing some Andreas Vollenweider. I don't recall the rest.

  3. I'm inspired to label some shelves and drawers. It's burdensome to have to remember what's where and I have limited brain space for anything that's burdensome!

  4. Cynthia, I've labeled shelves and drawers for clients - and for myself. It's especially helpful when there's been a change, and people aren't yet used to what goes where. Or for any storage space you don't use frequently, or for any shelves/drawers shared by two or more people.

  5. Barbara's shelves look great!

I've only labeled the shelves in the closet for sheets so far. And that was more for the DS and DH so they could find the right ones.

I've read that advice so many times regarding book shelves - put some other items with the books to break it up a bit. Also swap which side of the shelves to put the books on, and put some on their sides. It does work!
