Step Stools for Safely Reaching Your Stored Stuff

wood folding stepladder

If you have storage that's higher than you can easily reach, please get a sturdy step stool (or stepladder) to use. The folding stepladder above is sold by Improvements - and, as the company says, it's much prettier than the metal one sitting in my garage. Update on April 1, 2014: I'm no longer finding this at Improvements, but what seems to be the same one is available at Frontgate and Amazon.com.

Of course, you don't need to get something that fancy. This stool by Flambeau - a combination toolbox and step stool - is an interesting possibility. You can get it in yellow or pink from Awesome Tools.

The last time I wrote about this topic - see Related Post below - I listed the E-Z Folds step stool. This time I'm listing the Easy Fold step stool from Kikkerland - similar, but not the same. It comes in seven different colors, and takes a load of 300 pounds. Update on April 1, 2014: Kikkerland has redesigned this stool, and is now calling it the Rhino Short Step Stool.

Here's a step stool for those who feel more comfortable with one that has a handle.

And here's another style of long-handled step stool.

wood step stool - walnut and oak

Want a step stool that's also a work of art? Here's one made of walnut and oak; it holds up to 200 pounds. Update on April 1, 2014: I'm no longer finding the company that made this step stool.

Or maybe you'd prefer Greg's Stools from Hardwood Artisans. I found these step stools on the company's blog and Facebook page, but I can't find them on the main site.

Finally, for something taller, there's the Trappestigen Stepladder, which holds up to 200 kg (440 pounds). You can buy it from Tegnestuen Hindevadgaard in Denmark; it's also sold by Great Dane Furniture in Australia. [via Better Living Through Design]

  1. I love the first and last ladders. I really like the last one with the long rail for a bit of extra help with balance.

Our house has 9' ceilings, and I put closet shelves in higher than normal. I also have small metal ladders that are about 2" thick when folded. One for each closet. I know the other occupants would stand on a chair rather than go get a stool.

  2. Good for you for keeping things safe, JustGail! I really love that last one, too - I always do seem to gravitate to the most expensive items.

  3. I just found your blog. Very nice. I always have problems trying to organize everything since we're also renovating the house at the same time. Great tips!
