Bedroom Storage Option: Bookcase Headboards

bookcase headboard with books, lamp, clock, etc.

Both of my beds - my own, and the one in the guest bedroom - have bookcase headboards. (That's my guest bedroom above.) You don't tend to see these much anymore - I guess they're out of fashion - but they can be incredibly useful. Waterbed stores tend to have them - remember waterbeds? But you can find them a few other places, too.

Not surprisingly, a place called Headboard Store has a number of options.

And some upscale bed manufacturers sell bookcase beds. This one come from Charles P. Rogers.

And this storage headboard comes from Pomponoosuc Mills.

For something more unusual (and more expensive), there's the Thai Bed from Design Centro Italia.

It seems you can also find bookcase headboards more easily in children's beds - either simple headboards for twin beds, or more fanciful ones, such as this one from Natart Juvenile.

  1. I had a nice big desk with a big hutch that got broke in a move. The hutch survived however, and my dad turned it into a headboard for me. I love having the shelves! He had to add additional support on the bottom to raise it high enough. It's not pretty, but it's functional, and I love it. :)

  2. Coral, thanks for writing; I'm glad to hear someone else loves her bookcase headboard!

If you feel inspired to send me a picture, I'll publish it on a follow-up post.

  4. Here's a comment I got in e-mail:

Ikea also has a very nice storage headboard in their MALM series. It rolls out on either side to access your stuff and then rolls back to hide all the clutter! I don't have it, but I wish I did!

  5. Okay, I feel a bit like a spoilsport, but having made it through the 6.7 earthquake in 1994 which hit Los Angeles at 4:30 in the morning, I don't want anything above my head when I'm asleep in bed!

You're a brave soul up there in Quakeland North! (And, yes, these are all lovely headboards.)

  6. Cynthia,

In my bedroom, my headboard used to just rest on the bed frame. That was scary, because it's a heavy headboard; now it's VERY well bolted to the wall.

In my guest bedroom, the headboard is part of the bed frame, so it's not going anywhere.

    As to the contents ...

Generally, I've tried to keep the heavier stuff down low, so it won't hurt anyone if it falls. If you look at my guest bedroom picture, the books are all at mattress level. The tissue box is fine on the higher shelf - it won't hurt anyone if it falls on them!

I might go take some museum wax to the lamp, though, to keep it in place - and I just moved the clock on the lower level.

  7. Although I have a fairly large house there is little or no storage areas in it. One cupboard, under the stairs, seems to hold a tremendous amount of junk "that I must keep" and various household essentials. Every spot including under all the beds is full of boxes storing some "must keep" items. A storage headboard sounds exactly what I need.
